DONCASTER WORKS

PART 34  -  DRAWINGS FOR STIRLING ENGINES

Stirling was Locomotive Engineer on the GNR for almost 30 years, which saw dramatic changes, yet certain basic feature persisted, notably domeless boilers, and the "clean line" appearance of his machines.

Stirling boiler barrels had 3 concentric rings, tapering down towards the smokebox. In general, Ivatt boilers had two concentric rings, but not always tapering down towards the smokebox.  Stirling boilers were without domes, and Ivatt introduced domes early in 1896.

This Appendix covers selected Doncaster Drawings for Stirling engines, notably Smokebox (I), Valve and Reversing Gear (K), Boilers (M), Boilers (N), Frames (O), general Plans (P/Q), Connecting & Coupling Rods (S), Wheels (T), Brass fittings (W).  Several batches of engines were built by outside contractors, hence the apparent absence of certain drawings.  Certain Stirling rebuilds of Sturrock engines have also been included, as part of the evolution process. Details have been extended after 1896, in particular covering the changes Ivatt rapidly made to Stirling's last boiler, which became Ivatt's 4ft. 5in. diameter "standard" domed boiler.

Where possible the wording in the drawing register is given in the last column, as exact as is possible as not all pages in the drawing registers have been found. Occasionally the only source is a typed copy made some 60 years ago, in which errors have been found, in particular the original wording for Boiler drawings N1 to N32 is not known.  However for the general Plan drawings (P and Q), a more meaningful description has been given.

My notes appear within square brackets.  For further details, see Groves' "GREAT NORTHERN LOCOMOTIVE HISTORY", Volume 2.
