*** Boiler 7448 was originally marked off to Ivatt engine No. 360, but this engine was instead immediately withdrawn (3/1919).  The reason for the last minute decision to condemn No. 360 was not given, but it should be noted that sister engines 363/64/67 were also condemned during 1919.  These four engines were Doncaster Works Nos. 842/45/46/47, suggesting a possible flaw in manufacture twenty years before had just come to light.

** The boiler fitted to No. 211 came from Class J23 No. 158, so had already been rebuilt.  Apart from the boilers specifically altered for new Class J23 engines, several other boilers from Class L1 had been altered to provide an adequate pool for renewal purposes.  Several were altered after Grouping, the best example being Boiler No. 872 (from BO522), which had served in Stirling 2-2-2 No. 872 (5/1901-6/1907), Ivatt 0-8-2T No. 117 (11/1911-4/1921) and finally Gresley Class J51 No. 3175 (12/1924-9/1932).

BO662 (21/9/1922) for 2 boilers for renewals, but after Grouping were marked as “Need for EO301”, though remarks for BO675 suggest at one time they were later earmarked for EO303 (the two Mikado’s).  In the event they were used for the first two engines of EO301 (issued 10/1923), and the two Mikado’s received boilers intended for the A1 order.

This number was never used. It is possible that BO622 was originally for 3 boilers, and the third was cancelled, but there is no evidence of this.
